Bearing Carlos' original name of Walter Carlos, the album was conceived by Carlos not as an attempt to revive Bach but because she was dissatisfied with the use of electronic instruments before 1968 and wanted to use them to play appealing music. The album was a smash, peaking at No. 10 on the Billboard chart, staying at the top of Billboard’s classical chart for three years, being certified platinum, and winning three Grammy Awards.
