The first disc, featuring "Blind" Willie McTell, contains the music he recorded after being "discovered" in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1949, by the Regal label. The music (including a few alternates) is a combination of country blues, spirituals, and popular tunes. McTell recorded this music under the names "Pig 'N' Whistle Red" or "Blind Willie", with Curly Weaver accompanying McTell on second guitar and vocals. On these songs McTell's voice and guitar are both strong-almost rivaling his earlier recordings. Blind Willie McTell was one of the important blues artists of the twenties and thirties. While his work has been valued all along by blues collectors, he became known to a broader public as a result of Bob Dylan's late and laudatory ballad. Best known for his "Statesboro Blues," McTell had a wider repertoire, consisting of traditional blues, ragtime and gospel music.
