Gnosis (Monuments album). All of the material on Gnosis was composed by guitarist John Browne long before the album's release. Original vocalists Neema Askari and Greg Pope wrote lyrics for the songs, many of which were performed live during the band's early tours. Due to disagreements, the two vocalists left the band in 2011, leaving the band unable to use the. lyrics written previously. In 2012, Matt Rose was recruited into the group to fill the vacancy.
Like their previous work, Gnosis is an album that is loaded with tons of strong and technical metallic grooves throughout. They are the build of much of the album’s music overall, but each song is diverse enough from each other to keep the listener interested. These grooves are as heavy and pulverizing as they are complex and technical. In other words, while the ambience is great in this album, it’s not enough to make Monuments completely stand out of the modern progressive metal crowd completely.
Monuments are a British progressive metal band formed by formers Fellsilent guitarist, John Browne, and former The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza guitarist, Josh Travis. The band has released three full-length albums via Century Media Records, Gnosis, The Amanuensis and Phronesis in 2012, 2014 and 2018 respectively. The band was formed by Fellsilent guitarist John Browne and The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza guitarist Josh Travis in 2007.
Gnosis is monolithic. The mechanical, jarring nature of the guitar work clearly pays homage to metal titans Meshuggah, however the riffs found on Gnosis are more dynamic and interesting than anything the aforementioned has released in years. It’s rare for an album to immediately grab me as Gnosis has. In fact, there are very, very few albums that have done so. ‘Admit Defeat’s cleanly picked intro quickly descends into distorted chaos, displaying an intensity only very few bands are capable of.

Wednesday, 29 August 2012. Written by Ben Bland. Musically, Monuments are as type as their contemporaries, if a little bit more restrained. The only time they really seem more desperate to impress than to write good songs is on final track Denial which, with its cameo appearance by Periphery frontman Spencer Soleto, merely sounds like a very average Periphery track (. big on technicality, low on interesting ideas). Thankfully, however, it is not indicative of the overall nature of this record. Gnosis is frequently interesting and imaginative, if occasionally a little one dimensional; but then, what records of this style are not?
