Aretha Franklin was one of the most iconic voices in music history and a brilliant artist, Franklin’s record label Sony Music said in a statement. Dubbed the Queen of Soul in 1967, Franklin loomed over culture in several monumental ways. The daughter of a preacher man, she was born with one of pop’s most commanding and singular voices, one that could move from a sly, seductive purr to a commanding gospel roar. Her 1968 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance (for Respect ) was the first of eight consecutive times she would take that honor (she came back and won it again in 1982, 1986 and 1988). Franklin’s 1971 shows at San Francisco’s Fillmore West, immortalized on the live album Aretha Live at Fillmore West, were a visceral example of her crossover ability, but they weren’t a given success: I wasn’t sure how the hippies reacted to me, she later said.

Aretha Franklin was the best of us. More than just a national treasure, she seemed like an elemental gift sprung from the building blocks of the universe itself. At the end of the day, Aretha’s best album might be 1972’s Amazing Grace, her astounding live-recorded gospel set featuring contributions from James Cleveland and the Southern California Community, along with Albertina Walker and the Caravans, and Clara Ward. Released at the height of Aretha’s success to remind secular skeptics of her sanctified roots, Amazing Grace remains the greatest demonstration that spiritual gospel and emotional pop have long been indelibly interconnected.

Aretha Franklin's years at Atlantic brought her commercial success and a well-earned reputation as America's finest soul singer, and The Queen of Soul is a four-disc set that brings together 87 songs from Franklin's 1967-1979 tenure with the label.

Aretha Franklin, whose exceptionally expressive singing about joy and pain and faith and liberation earned the Detroit diva a permanent and undisputed title - the Queen of Soul - died Aug. 16 at her home in Detroit. She was 76. Gwendolyn Quinn, Ms. Franklin’s representative, announced the death and said the cause was pancreatic cancer. One of the most celebrated and influential singers in the history of American popular music, Ms. Franklin secured lasting fame in the late 1960s and early 1970s by exploring the secular sweet spot between sultry rhythm and blues and the explosive gospel music.
